TOTAL UNITS REQUIRED:  120 Minimum (of which 42 must be upper-division >300 level)

  • On average, students complete 30 units per academic year - your schedule may vary so work with an advisor to plan each term!

  • The BA CHEM will provide 17-19 of the required 42 units of upper-division work. You must make up for this deficiency by completing other course work as upper-division. (Tier 2 gen-eds, electives, minor courses, etc.)

Notes for BA Degree

Note 1. English Composition

Depending on placement in the English Proficiency Test, one of the following sequences must be taken:

A. English 100, 101, and 102

B. English 101 and 102 (or 107 and 108)

C. English 103H and 104H; (or with AP credit, ENGL 109H)

 Note 2. Second Language

Students who do not demonstrate fourth-semester proficiency in a second language upon entrance will be required to complete up to four courses in a second language.  This coursework would be best completed in first two years and would reduce the number of electives needed. The College of Science accepts any language for this requirement.  The Department of Chemistry suggests German for a professional degree.  Premed students majoring in chemistry frequently satisfy this requirement by taking Spanish. Please refer to the University General Catalog http://catalog.arizona.edu/2007%2D08/policies/secondlang.htm for further details regarding the foreign language requirements for this program.

Note 3. Diversity Emphasis Course

One course from Tier I or Tier II must serve as a diversity emphasis requirement; or a unique course may be selected. See catalog or schedule of classes for list of approved courses to satisfy these requirements. http://garnet.ccit.arizona.edu/cgi-bin/schedule/schedule.cgi

Note 4. First and Second Year Courses

Chemistry majors who have taken high school chemistry and physics and are enrolled in Math 124 in their first semester are strongly encouraged to take Chem 105&106 rather than Chem 151.  Chem 105 (lecture) and Chem 106 (lab) are honors courses for well prepared students.  Chem 242 & 244 are the corresponding second year honors organic chemistry courses.  These classes are small, faculty contact is extensive, and laboratory projects are individualized and challenging.  If there is a scheduling problem, preventing the student from completing CHEM 246/247, the student may enroll in Chem 241/243 instead with an advisor’s approval.

Note 5. Mid Career Writing Assessment

Students must complete the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) requirement, which consists of obtaining a grade of "B" or better in second semester English Composition (ENGL 102, 104H/109H, or 108), prior to graduation.  Students receiving an unsatisfactory grade must consult their major advisor for guidance on how to meet this requirement.

Note 6. Course Offerings

Please note that certain courses are offered only once a year in the semester shown in the UA Catalog.  It is therefore imperative that the prerequisite or co-requisite courses be scheduled and completed prior to the semester these classes are offered.  Failure to do this may result in delay of graduation.

Note 7. Upper-Division Unit Requirement

Students must have earned a minimum of 42 upper-division units (300-499 level) within their major, general education requirements, or electives to be eligible for graduation. Consider taking Tier 2 courses as upper-division toward this requirement.

No minor is required for this program.
