Employment Opportunities

The Department provides a number of paid employment opportunities for qualified undergraduate students.  The following list describes the types of positions, required qualifications, and respective contacts.

Laboratory Technicians & Campus Jobs

Some research labs and some facilities employ students to assist with day-to-day operations.  Requirements will vary depending on the emphasis of the lab or facility.  More information regarding facility positions can be obtained from faculty.

The Wildcat Joblink has updated postings of on-campus jobs. See http://www.career.arizona.edu/?joblink-main for opportunities.

Preproom Worker

The Department hires a large number of students to assist with the operation of the Preproom that supports our undergraduate laboratory courses.  This will involve such tasks as preparing chemicals and equipment for use in our courses, allocating equipment, and cleaning labs.  Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated understanding of laboratory safety and procedures.

Ms. Delight Craddock, TSO Koffler 201, 621-2555 delightc@email.arizona.edu

On occasion, the Department hires hard-working students to assist with office operations.  Good people skills are a must.  Contact Delight Craddock for further information.

Teaching/Student Assistant (SA)

Mr. Steven Brown, Koffler 201, 621-9980, sbrown@u.arizona.edu

Dr. Anne Padias, Koffler 201, 621-9978, anne@u.arizona.edu

Teaching Support Office, Koffler 201, 621-2555

In addition to Graduate Teaching Assistants, the department on occasion hires undergraduates to teach labs.  They are referred to as Student Assistants (SA).  Being a SA has many advantages beyond financial remuneration.  Teaching chemical concepts to freshmen is an excellent way to improve your own understanding of basic chemical concepts.  As a staff member of the Department, you will gain a better understanding of the research and teaching functions of the Department as you interact with faculty, graduate students and staff.  And, of course, teaching is an excellent reference for graduate or medical school, as well as for industrial positions.   For further information and qualifications, please refer to the contacts above.
