  New Chemistry Preceptorship Program
(CHEM 391, 391H or 491)

Do you want to have the opportunity to gain experience teaching at the college level and reflect about central issues in learning science?

Enroll in CHEM x91 and serve as preceptor in a chemistry course

You will work with instructors and graduate teaching assistants to help them develop and implement diverse activities in a lecture or laboratory section.

You will earn three units of credit for 9 hours of participation in preceptorship activities.
Some preceptors could be hired as Student Assistants for a maximum of 10 additional hours a week.

Preceptor Duties and Responsibilities

Preceptors will work with instructors and graduate teaching assistants to help them develop and implement diverse activities in a lecture or laboratory section. They will:

  •       attend planning sessions before the beginning of the academic semester

  •       attend and participate in all course sessions throughout the academic semester (preceptors are expected to actively participate in as many sessions as possible by facilitating in-class discussions, supervising student work, preparing and leading chemical demonstrations, etc.)

  •       participate in one planning session a week with the instructor

  •       complete the tasks assigned by the instructor

  •       participate in a weekly seminar/workshop on teaching/learning topics

  •       hold office hours

Grading

Students will earn a grade based on the quality and quantity of their participation in the different sessions of the program (planning, teaching, seminar).  Final grades will take into account the program coordinators’ and the supervising instructor’s evaluation of the student. Instructors may also require the development of a preceptorship portfolio.

Prerequisites

  • Successful completion of the course (a grade of A or B) for which you will serve as preceptor.

  • Interview with the course instructor.

 Interested?

  • First find a faculty member and CHEM course for which you wish to preceptor.

  • Download the Chemistry Preceptorship Contract & Application and fill it out.

  • Once your form has been approved by the course instructor/preceptor advisor, return it to Robin Rarick (OC 225) to be added to the CHEM x91 class.
