Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BS CHEM)

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is a degree that is certified by the American Chemical Society, and the names of our graduates are on file at the Society’s headquarters.  This program is recommended for those interested in attending graduate school in a science, working in industrial or government labs, or those who are pursuing a professional career in chemistry or planning to pursue post-graduate studies in chemistry.

In addition to UA general education, English, and foreign language requirements, the BS CHEM involves math through calculus III, two semesters of calculus-based physics with labs, and about 56 units of core chemistry course work.  BS students complete courses involving:

  • general chemistry
  • organic chemistry
  • quantitative analysis
  • instrumental analysis
  • physical chemistry
  • inorganic chemistry and
  • biochemistry
  • and will choose from a variety of electives which can involve independent research, preceptorships, internships, or other approved chemistry courses.

Bachelor of Science in Education - Chemistry Option (BSC CHEM)

T

he Bachelor of Science in Education with a chemistry emphasis is designed for students wishing to follow a career in middle or high school teaching.  The College of Science Teacher Preparation Program provides these majors the opportunity to take courses and engage in school experiences that will lead to eligibility for teaching certification.  This program requires  math through calculus II, two semesters of calculus-based physics with labs, 26 units of core chemistry course work plus 11 chemistry elective units; 27 units science teaching; 3 units science pedagogy, and 12 units of other electives, in addition to UA general education, English, and foreign language requirements.

In their last year of this program, education students spend time as a student teacher in a local school to get experience working in the classroom. Vicente Talanquer is the major advisor for students in the BSC program with the CHM option.

Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (BA CHEM)

T

he Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry is a liberal arts degree and is designed for students planning to pursue professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, law, business, or pharmacy for example.

The BA CHEM requires math through calculus II, two semesters of algebra or calculus-based physics with labs, and 35-37 units of core chemistry course work, in addition to other UA graduation requirements. BA students complete courses involving:

  • general chemistry
  • organic chemistry
  • quantitative analysis and
  • physical chemistry

and will select an area of focus involving a two-course sequence from instrumental analysis, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, or organic synthesis to complete the major.

Chemistry Minor (CHEM)

Please read FAQs before contacting a CHEM advisor.

Requirements:

1) 8 units of general chemistry as:

  • CHEM 103a or 105a & CHEM 104a or 106a

  • CHEM 103b or 105b & CHEM 104b or 106b (8 units) no exceptions!

2) 12 additional units of CHEM (cross-listed courses are OK) preferably from two different areas of chemistry (beyond general chemistry) that must include at least two units of lab work (CHEM 405 is not a lab)

Notes:

  • CHEM 257a, 302a, 396a and 391/491 do not apply to the minor

  • A minimum of 3 units toward the CHEM minor must be completed at UA; a 2.000 GPA is required for all University Credit in the minor regardless of catalog year.

Students do not need to obtain a signature for the CHEM minor on either the Change of Major form or on the degree check, as long as the minor is completed as structured and defined on the APRR, and the student is not requesting the application of a transfer course (without a UA equivalent) or requesting a UA course substitution in the minor. Questions can be directed to Robin Rarick.
